A Trip on The Cambrian

Members of Freightliner’s European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) team went on a programme-led excursion to see and learn about the Cambrian Line. European Train Control System (ETCS) was installed on The Cambrian, a 211 km single line rail connecting Shrewsbury Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, in 2011 as part of an early deployment scheme to test the effectiveness of ETCS in the United Kingdom.

The event, coordinated by the East Coast Digital Programme, provided attendees an opportunity to:

  • Experience a cab ride to see ETCS in operation  and speak with ETCS drivers;
  • Visit to the Radio Block Centre/Signalling Control centre at Machynlleth and speak with the signallers who control the ETCS movement of trains;
  • Discuss thoughts and observations with fellow attendees from various sectors within the industry.
